What are the most common foot and ankle injuries?

While anyone can experience a foot or ankle-related injury, if you play certain sports or are involved in certain physical activities, you may be more likely to experience sprains, strains, and fractures of the foot and ankle. Some of the most common sports-related foot and ankle injuries include:

A sprained ankle or foot occurs when you twist your ankle or foot in an unusual position, which can cause the ligaments to rip or stretch past their normal threshold. Symptoms of a sprained ankle or foot may include:

  • Pain in the affected area
  • Sore area is tender to touch
  • Swelling or bruising of the affected and surrounding area
  • Difficulty moving the affected ankle or foot
  • Difficulty standing or placing weight on the affected foot
  • Hearing or feeling a pop when the injury first occurs

Also known as a “pulled muscle,” a strain occurs when your muscle or tendon tears or is stretched beyond its normal limit. Similar to a sprain, a strain can occur when the foot or ankle twists in an unusual way. A strain can occur suddenly or over time as a result of frequent, recurrent stress placed on the foot. Symptoms of a strain may include:

  • Aching pain in the affected area
  • Muscle or tendon spasms
  • Swelling of the affected area
  • Limited ability to move the affected foot

Tendonitis occurs when a tendon becomes inflamed, usually as a result of frequent stress placed on the affected tendon. Tendonitis can affect the foot or ankle. One of the most common types of tendonitis, Achilles tendonitis, affects the Achilles tendon. Other types of tendonitis include posterior tibial tendonitis, peroneal tendonitis, extensor tendonitis, and anterior tibial tendonitis. You may be more prone to tendonitis if you have certain foot characteristics, injuries, or medical conditions. Symptoms of tendonitis may include:

  • Pain in the affected area
  • Swelling of the affected area
  • Affected area is tender to touch
  • Difficulty moving the affected area without experiencing pain

A fracture is a break in your bone. The fracture can be big or small and can occur in one bone or multiple bones. A fractured ankle or foot can occur as a result of various accidents, such as tripping, twisting your ankle, or other physical traumas. Symptoms of a fracture may include:

  • Pain in the affected area
  • Severe pain that prevents you from walking or placing weight on the affected foot
  • Bruising or redness of the affected area

How are foot and ankle injuries treated?

To help speed up recovery time, your doctor will usually suggest the RICE method, which stands for rest, ice, compression, and elevation. The RICE method can be effective for sprained ankles, strains, fractures, and other foot and ankle injuries. Depending on your condition additional treatment options may include:

  • Splints to keep the affected area from moving
  • Wearing appropriate footwear
  • Using crutches
  • Certain medications
  • Physical therapy
  • Certain medical procedures
