A New Year, A New You

At the risk of sounding like a tag line for a women’s magazine (not that there’s anything wrong with that, my wife has a few subscriptions), it’s a new year, and if the patients of my NYC podiatry practice haven’t done so already, it’s time to set some goals and get moving.  We all have our own set of goals and challenges, but I would like to offer a few suggestions to make 2013 the best year since 2012.

First of all- stop smoking.  Do people still do this?  I mean, seriously.  As if.  An expensive foul habit that leads to cancer, emphysema, heart disease, peripheral arterial disease including amputations (for sure, I’ve seen it), and there’s almost nowhere left to do it, and despite all that, people persist and smoke.  As mentioned in an earlier blog, I will no longer offer elective foot surgery to smokers.  I don’t want the complications and neither do my NYC podiatry patients.

Let’s all exercise just a little more.  This doesn’t mean running a marathon or completing an Ironman competition or even a Tough Mudder if that’s your thing.  Consider 20 minutes of walking, 5 days a week.  The health benefits are enormous, the cost is nonexistent, and the effort is minimal.

Make this the year you check something off your bucket list.  Read a big book.  Climb a mountain. Get a dog.  Drink less coffee.  Something.

What the world needs now is love, sweet love.  Burt Bachrach and Hal David said it back in 1965 and it’s still true.  (Insert your own comment here).

Take care of your feet.  Ok, this is a NYC podiatry blog, isn’t it?  Stop staring at that skin growth, bunion, hammertoe, fungal nail, or large soft tissue mass and come to your NYC podiatrist for an evaluation.  Stop living with heel, ankle or big toe joint pain and discover that there are many non-surgical and surgical treatments that relieve pain, restore function, and make the foot look a whole lot better.  Consider a pair of orthotics for custom made sweet relief and propulsion.

Whatever you do, make this your year.  2012 was tough for a lot of people.  Let’s move forward and help each other to make 2013 a great year for all.
